10 Albany Area Things You Must Do Before Summer is Over

It feels like it just got here, but it’s hard to believe that summer is at the halfway point. The kids head back to school in just over a month, and the leaves will be changing before we know it. But – there’s still plenty of time left to get in all those things we’ll be thinking about come December when there’s 2 feet (or more) of snow on the ground.

Go to a Tri-City ValleyCats Game

Our nation’s favorite past time in our home town is the perfect summer night out. The best part is, even the most expensive tickets are $11.50 day of game! The ValleyCats’ regular season lasts through Labor Day.

Go Out for Soft Ice Cream

Go Out for Soft Ice Cream

Is there anything better on a warm summer night then a cold, creamy cone? I think not. Everyone has their own favorite spot picked out, but just in case you need some help picking one out, here’s a list of our sister station’s favorites.

Go to a Concert at SPAC

By far, one of my favorite things to do in summer is head up to SPAC for a show. I’ve already been up there for Matchbox Twenty and the Goo Goo Dolls, and for Bon Jovi. There are still a bunch of shows left for the summer, too. If you go to John Mayer or Kelly Clarkson and Maroon 5 – be sure to say hi if you see me!

Go to a Farmer’s Market

There’s nothing like fresh flowers, fruits, veggies, and other homemade/homegrown items in the summer time. We’re fortunate enough to have a plethora of local farmer’s markets you can check out. One of my favorites has to be the one in Troy. They have a huge farmer’s market at their waterfront every Saturday.

Eat at Jumpin’ Jacks

Whenever you head to Jumpin’ Jacks in Scotia, it’s like you’re stepping back into the 50’s. The food is good, cheap, and ready quickly. The milkshakes are cold and creamy. Throw in the ski show and firework on random nights – it’s the epitome of summer.

Watch a Movie at the Drive Ins

Summer is always the best time of the year for movies, and there is nothing like sitting in the comfort of your own car/lawn chair/picnic blanket while doing it. Whether it’s the Malta Drive In’s, Hollywood Drive Ins, or – my personal favorite – the Jericho Drive Ins, you can’t go wrong. Plus, it’s a lot cheaper then going to the theaters!

Go Hiking at Thacher Park

Maybe it’s just because I grew up in Voorheesville, but no summer seems complete unless you take a hike on the Indian Ladder Trail at Thacher Park. The scenery, the waterfall mid way through the trek – there’s nothing better. Plus, its one of the best views of the Capital Region! Be sure to wave hi to my parents house – you can see it from the overlook.

Go Tubing Down a River

You get dropped off at one point. Float for a few hours, in the summer sun, with your friends and family. What could be better? There are lots of places to go in our area, but you’ll catch me on the Battenkill in a few weekends.

Road Trip to Lake George

Lake George. In the summer. Do I really need to explain?

Play the Ponies at the Saratoga Race Track

Okay, so you don’t have to gamble, but NOTHING says summer in the Albany Area like heading up to the track. Pick a day, put on a cute sundress and a floppy hat, and enjoy!
