Margot Robbie has reportedly signed on to portray Tonya Harding, the famous figure skater turned reviled media target, in a new movie called I, Tonya written by Steven Rogers.

Bryan Unkeless and Clubhouse Pictures have signed on to produce, according to a report from Deadline, though no director is attached to the movie as of yet.

I, Tonya will tell the story of Harding, who rose to the heights of the figure skating world despite her impoverished, abusive upbringing. Her story ultimately took a turn for the worse, when an assault against her competitor Nancy Kerrigan was revealed to have been spearheaded by Harding’s husband Jeff Gillooly. Gillooly implicated his wife as a co-conspirator.

Gillooly hired a hit man named Shane Stant to break Kerrigan’s leg just ahead of the 1994 Olympic Games. Stant only managed to bruise Kerrigan, but a doctor advised her against participating in the national championship the next day. Harding went on to win the gold medal instead, earning both she and Kerrigan spots on the Olympic team. Kerrigan went on to win the silver medal, while Harding placed eighth.

The news soon broke, however, that Harding had been involved in Kerrigan’s attack, though Harding has repeatedly denied any knowledge of the assault. She was later banned from figure skating for life.

Despite the media’s insistence on vilifying Harding back in 1994, information has since come to light suggesting the U.S. Figure Skating Association encouraged the former figure skater to remain in her marriage, despite claims from Harding that Gillooly was abusive toward her.

There’s no word yet as to how sympathetic a light I, Tonya will cast Harding, but Deadline reports that Rogers completed in-depth interviews with both Harding and Gillooly before writing his script.
