Second Explosion in Less Than a Year at Mohawk Asphalt Emulsions in Glenville

Lots of neighbors reported that they could feel the boom and hear the commotion from their homes this morning.

Early this morning (Thursday, September 28th) a loud explosion rocked Glenville near the Mohawk Asphalt Emulsions plant. Turns out a fuel tank had caught fire and was burning tar products. Luckily fire crews, including the Air National Guard's airport crash truck, arrived on the scene quickly and were able to extinguish the fire. According to the The Daily Gazette there were 5 employees on duty at the plant at the time and got out of there as quickly as possible, waited for first responders to arrive, and most importantly no one was hurt during the explosion.

What is particularly unsettling about this incident is that this is not the first time this has happened. In fact almost a year to the day ago another explosion happened at the very same plant that severely hurt three of three of their employees and ultimately claimed two of their lives.

Authorities are involved again and will be thoroughly investigating the incident.

Thank goodness for the training everyone went through after the first explosion and for the quick response of fire crews that kept everyone safe this time around but I think it may be time to start some better business practices to prevent this from happening for a third time.
