Shailene Woodley Wishes She Took a Better Mugshot After Pipeline Protest Arrest

Shailene Woodley has some regrets about being arrested at the Dakota Access Pipeline Protest in October — chief among them, the way her consequent mugshot turned out.

Woodley said on last night’s Late Show With Stephen Colbert that she had no idea her photo from the police station would go viral, and would have probably gone for a different look if she had a second chance.

“I wish I’d known that this was going to be as public as it was,” she said. “I would have made, like, a face. I’m just looking at the person, like, ‘Are you kidding me right now?’”

As for the arrest, itself, Woodley said she had no regrets about standing with Bismarck’s Native American population in protest of pipeline construction that threatens the area’s people and resources. And while she’s proud to have broadcast her convictions to protecting tribal lands via Facebook Live, she says handing her phone to her mother as the cuffs came out involved some emotional complication.

“I handed her my phone and I was like, ‘Keep recording,’” she said. “I can’t imagine what it would be like to watch your daughter be handcuffed and taken away.”

And now that Woodley’s had time to reflect on her experience, she’s encouraging people to keep fighting against what they see as wrong, specifically in the era of the divisive President Trump.

“The front lines don’t necessarily have to be in North Dakota,” she said. “The front lines can be wherever you are. You can create a protest in New York City, because protests are about awareness and about people coming together.”
