The Pfeffermans Head to Israel in New ‘Transparent’ Season 4 Trailer

The third season of Amazon’s Transparent heavily dipped its feet into spiritual waters, questioning the systems of belief that have long guided its characters. Kathryn Hahn’s Rabbi Raquel opened the season with a monologue about a crisis of faith that set the tone for the season, which ended with a fraught family vacation that found the Pfeffermans just starting to break from their cocoons. It makes all the more sense that the series fourth season will find the family exploring their Jewish heritage on the other side of the world.

In the latest trailer for Season 4 of Transparent, Maura (Jeffrey Tambor) takes a trip to Israel, where of course the rest of the family follows. “I’m learning things,” she says. “You can just start again and never look back.” After discovering she wasn’t able to undergo facial feminization surgery and other forms of gender confirmation surgery at the tail end of last season (an abrupt narrative choice I’m still questionable about), Maura’s looking to her own family and ancestral history to get to know herself better. Judith Light‘s Shelly seems to be living her best life, finally unwinding and treating herself (just look at the size of that sandwich she’s devouring; that is self-care goals). Ali (Gaby Hoffman), Sarah (Amy Landecker), and Josh (Jay Duplass), always a trio of self-destructive messes, are still trying to figure it all out. Here’s the official season synopsis:

The Pfeffermans take off on a spiritual and political journey as they dig deep into their family’s history. Maura (Jeffrey Tambor) heads to Israel to speak at a conference and makes a startling discovery.  Before long the rest of the family joins her for an explosive adventure. Adrift in the desert, Maura, Ali (Gaby Hoffmann), Sarah (Amy Landecker), Josh (Jay Duplass) and Shelly (Judith Light) ultimately set off on their own paths to find acceptance, love, and truth.

It’s a shame the latest trailer doesn’t feature any of the trans talent in the supporting cast, from Alexandra Billings to Trace Lysette and other new anticipated guest actors. But it’s still arriving at a time when trans stories are needed most on screen, especially this week following the news of Trump’s discriminatory announcement banning trans people from serving in the U.S. military.

The cast and crew of Transparent shared a statement with People magazine in light of the hurtful news. “We are outraged that he announced in a tweet that transgender people would not be allowed to serve ‘in any capacity’ in the U.S. military,” the statement reads. “It is reprehensible to deny an estimated 15,000 current trans service members, and 134,000 trans veterans, the dignity, respect and safety that they deserve.” The cast and crew go on to share a message of support for trans folks actively serving in the military today. “We work in solidarity with you and will continue fighting and creating art for our community’s well-being and future.”

Transparent Season 4 debuts on Amazon Prime on September 22.
